Networking #2

Photo taken by Hannah Roberts, December 2, 2015.

This is a photo of me and my friend Dorian who is a member of Young Professionals Grand Rapids at a meeting about Jeunesse, he is the one who introduced me to YP and Jeunesse.

This opportunity I was apprehensive about at first because I felt it wasn’t something I could see myself doing. I was glad that I went to this meeting though because Luke- the guy who started YP and Vemma at Michigan State came along with Alex- a guy who is one of the most influential players a part of Jeunesse in Michigan to speak about their experiences in their programs. They talked about how they grew up and their experience with school and how they got started in their YP programs.

I thought it was especially cool how they kept on talking about how they were in the business because it was something that they were really passionate about and because it was a program that was all about helping other people. They kept on mentioning that Vemma and Jeunesse were businesses in which you couldn’t succeed unless you helped someone else succeed. I think this is awesome especially now-a-days when competition is so tight and sometimes nasty. There are always people trying to outrun other people and companies trying to outrun other companies so this was refreshing.

Overall this was a really eye opening experience and I can definitely see myself going again, maybe not to join the program (at least not yet) but to hear how people’s lives are being changed for the better.

The Future of My Blog

As for the future of this blog, I am still not sure if I want to keep it or delete it. In a way I feel that if I were to delete it, I would be deleting all of my work over the course of the semester and all of the time I put into it and I’m not sure if I can bring myself to do that. On the other hand, I don’t see myself adding to this blog in particular and I’m not sure I would use it further. I can see myself starting another blog similar to this one. Now that I have experience in blogging I can start a new blog from scratch and make it better than this one.

Pro’s to keeping this blog:

  • I spent a lot of time on it and it won’t go to waste
  • It demonstrates my work throughout the semester
  • Shows my experience in using certain technologies
  • May look good to certain employers in certain fields

Cons to keeping this blog:

  • Some of the posts aren’t my greatest
  • Portions of this blog feel amateur to me
  • If employers see it and don’t like the work it may hurt me
  • I’m not sure it will be added to
  • Starting a new better blog will make this one inactive
  • If I find a career in Finance this type of blog may not help me

This blog could potentially introduce me to new possible employers if it is shared and seen enough. I think for this to happen though I need to go back and revise a few of my posts and I would have to work on my SEO/SEM.

Social Media

Just a little background information

Instagram was co-founded by Kevin Systrom. It originated out of California and started out as a private company. In just a year and a half, Instagram managed to attract 30 million users. Mark Zuckerburg later offered Systrom $1 billion to buy Instagram, in that included $300 million in cash and the rest in Facebook stock.

How Do I Use Instagram?

Instagram is an application in which you can take photos, add filters, write a fairly short caption, and share them to your profile for all of your followers to see. I use Instagram as strictly a personal outlet. My profile is just for my use only, I just post photos to share to my followers what I am up to, things that I have done, and things that I like. I also use it to follow friends, celebrities, and bloggers that capture my interest.

How Do I See Others Use Instagram?

Instagram, however, is increasingly becoming an assist for companies and brands to reach more visitors. Instagram is being further implemented in a growing number of companies. Depending on the target market, Instagram is a good way to get word out about their product or brand in a fun easy way that reaches a huge amount of people. I also see that there are an increasing amount of bloggers who post to Instagram as an easy way to reach more followers.

What Do I Think is Most Beneficial and Most Detrimental?

I think that the most beneficial thing about Instagram is how easy it is to use. It is a super fast and pain free way to share to followers what you are doing and what you are interested in. I don’t find this as crucial for me as it is for companies and brands. With a user volume of over 400 Million, there is a huge possibility to reach a very large number of people. What I see as the most detrimental is that there isn’t a clear easy way to share other people’s photos or profiles. There is no easy “retweet” option like there is with Twitter. With this there becomes the problem of how can the word about our profile or post be spread to other users or even other medias?

How Have I seen Instagram Change?

I have seen Instagram change in multiple different ways. Of course with being a technology based social media, there is always going to be changing and updating and altering, it is just a way to keep up with society and the latest trends. What I have noticed recently though is the increase in promoted ads, photos/videos, and profiles. I never used to see this but now at least a few times a day when I am scrolling through my newsfeed I notice multiple ads from companies or brands trying to promote their products.

This photo I took of myself at an American Marketing Association meeting. I am a marketing major so this event was a perfect one for me to go to. This was the first meeting of the year and they just went over what AMA was all about and introduced us to all of the e-board and all of the marketing professors at Grand Valley. I went to a few meetings last year and there were far more people at this meeting than there ever were at any of the meetings last year. It ended up that a majority of the e-board members were people that were in my classes and I knew a lot of other people there as well.

I have continued to go to their meetings and I have even become an official member. My experience with AMA has been great so far. A couple weeks ago we took a “field trip” to Domino Farms in Ann Arbor, Michigan to take a firm tour. I think that being in this organization will help me to figure out which direction in which I want to take my career. A lot of the meetings they bring in people who have experience in marketing for large companies in the real world that offer advice on how to get your foot in the door or what employers are looking for. I think that this organization will look good on my resume and I believe that I have already gotten a lot of good advice that I can put to use in the future.

For anyone that is a marketing major or even a marketing minor, I think this is a really good organization to join. Even just attending the meetings can offer a lot of valuable information.

For this assignment I used to make an infographic. In this website you can use previously made templates or create your own infographic completely from scratch. These infographics can be used to make a more visually appealing set of statistics or directions on how to do something. I think that businesses can really take advantage of this. If they want to get across facts in a way that isn’t too boring for others to read, this is the way to do it. There are so many reasons for which this website can be used it is hard to list them all but these could be example of a few

  • How to’s
  • Business statistic information
  • “About us” pages
  • posters encouraging action in some type of event
  • presentations
  • Business reports
  • comparisons
  • introduction of new product/event/idea

I liked using this website a lot. I thought it was easy to use and it was easy to come up with creative ideas which I liked a lot because I don’t see myself as a particularly creative person. I think its a really cool and unique way to present things and I like that it is so versatile in the way it can be used. I liked this assignment a lot and I can definitely see myself using in the future.

For this assignment I used Tweetdeck to schedule twitter posts to my profile. I like this website a lot. You can create separate personalized columns for updates you want to receive. You can choose what hashtags or people you specifically want to receive updates from and they will be separated into their own column away from all of the other clutter received from your newsfeed. The coolest feature to me is that you can schedule tweets ahead of time that way you don’t have to be on twitter the exact moment you want to create and post an update. Most of the time the things I post on my twitter are completely spontaneous and I feel like that is the way it is for most people, although there are specific people and pages that can utilize this feature.

If one were to run the twitter page for a business this website would be a really great one to utilize. If there are promotions you want to get out to people through this media outlet, you can schedule a tweet ahead of when you want it to post to your page. This is beneficial because you aren’t required to be on twitter at that moment of the post. If for some reason there is a critical time that you must post for this, say a sale or a release of information, this is the perfect way to get the message out there timely.

I really liked using Tweetdeck, I thought it was super easy to use and it has many beneficial features. I will definitely be using this website in the future.

Animated Gif

Gif taken from: Screenshot, Photoshop, November 9, 2015

Creating a gif was a very tedious task, at least for me. I couldn’t figure out from directions how to make one. I created new frames but all of the animations kept showing up in every single one of them and I didn’t know how to get the progression in separate frames. Once I figured it out I actually had a lot of fun making and messing around with it, and It was a fairly easy task once I got the hang of it. For mine I created a gif out of animations, I would like to learn next how to make them from real photos or videos. I have seen so many of them on social media sites, and I think it would be cool to know how to make them. Overall I thought this assignment was fun and by far one of my favorites this semester.
